Sue Evelyn Began

September 9, 1941 ~ October 25, 2021 (age 80)

Obituary

Sue Evelyn (Leopold) Began, age 80, of Neenah, passed away peacefully at her home with her family by her side on Monday, October 25, 2021, after a prolonged battle with cancer.

Sue was born in St. Louis, Missouri on September 9, 1941 daughter of the late Joseph and Evelyn (Smith) Leopold. She was one of four special Leopold daughters. She married Daniel E. Began, a naval officer, on June 15, 1968 much against her mother’s sage advice. We are glad she decided not to listen in this instance. They celebrated 53 years of marriage this summer and remained partners until the very end. In addition to her husband, Sue is survived by two children, Andy (Kate) Began and Katie Kearny; eight grandchildren, Jack, Charlie, John, Thomas and James Began and Mairin, Will and Drew Kearny. She is further survived by two sisters, Linda (Bob) Rizer and Carol (Dr. Ferid) Murad; two brothers-in-law, Joseph and Edward Began, her beloved dog, Nutmeg “Meg”, nieces, nephews and many wonderful friends.

Sue lived for her kids and grandchildren. They became a primary focus for her and she distinguished herself as a doting grandmother, loving wife and mother. She loved to attend various sporting events, concerts and plays. Despite being uncomfortable with technology, she also loved to FaceTime the kids to catch up on their weekly activities (usually with her camera pointed at the ceiling).. She expressed herself through her beautiful artwork and took the time to draw sketches of each of her grandchildren.

Sue was preceded in death by a son, Patrick and a sister, Joan (Tom) English. Pat’s loss forever changed the course of our family. She relied heavily upon her deep faith to continue on without them. We take strength in knowing they are reunited in heaven.

Sue was also very active in the community and was driven by her faith. She loved being a part of the Neenah Menasha Emergency Society in her earlier years as well as Tuesday Club, her beloved church bible group, and her zoom group “The Golden Girls” as well as the Tour de Lunch group which brought her such meaningful connections. More recently, she was an important part of the decision making for Patrick’s PBnJ Mental Health Fund. She derived deep joy in reading the thank you cards and letters from the scholarship recipients.

Memorial services will be held at 12:00 noon on Friday, October 29, 2021 at First Presbyterian Church, 200 Church St., Neenah with Pastors Kim Johnson and Paul Huxtable officiating. Visitation will be at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the PBnJ Memorial Fund in honor of Sue’s oldest son Patrick.
