Rose Pitsch Schafer Ertl, age 91, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 21, 2022, at Emerald Ridge Senior Care Facility in Neenah. On March 8, 1930, Rose was born the third of ten children to Peter and Cecelia Pitsch of Combined Locks.
Rose was a devout Catholic and charter member of St. Gabriel Parish where she was a Eucharistic Minister and participated in Perpetual Adoration. She enjoyed volunteering, especially for the St. Gabe’s Round-Ups. Rose was an avid reader, enjoyed movies, travel and golf, but above all, her favorite thing was enjoying breakfast with her siblings and friends.
She is survived by her two sons: Peter (Donna) Schafer, Winneconne; Joseph Schafer, Larsen; her daughter, Joyce (John Schneeman) Babbitts, Menasha; grandchildren: Rebecca, Scott, Joseph, Crystal (Scott), Cheyenne; great-grandchildren: Malachi, Lilly, and Ava; brothers: Arthur Pitsch, Oshkosh, and Don (Debbie) Pitsch, Hilbert; a sister, Germaine Jape, Neenah; brother-in-law, Duane (Judy) Westfahl, Neenah; and sister-in-law, Kathleen Graves, Oshkosh; step-children: Karen (Fran) Junion, Shawano; Connie (Jay) Vandermoss, Appleton; John (Leslie) Ertl, Hobe Sound, FL; step-grandchildren: Kyle, Cameron, Brooke, Derek, Dan, Michelle, and Lauren.
Rose was preceded in death by her husbands Wilbur Schafer in 1983 and Jerome Ertl in 1992; her son, William Schafer in 2000; daughter, Bonnie Losse in 2011; daughter-in-law, Sandy Schafer in 2021; two brothers: Kenneth and Dennis Pitsch; four sisters: Pauline Pitsch, Sister Joan Pitsch, Lorraine Tews, and Donna Westfahl; son-in-law, Gib Losse; brothers-in-law: Tom Jape, LeRoy Remme, and George Tews; and sister-in-law, Judy Pitsch.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated for Rose at 1:00pm on Thursday, March 3, 2022, at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 900 Geiger Street, Neenah with Fr. Bob Kollath officiating. Visitation will be held from 12:00pm until the hour of the Mass at the church. Interment will take place in St. Margaret Cemetery, Neenah.
The last four years of Rose’s life were spent in complete darkness and the family wishes to thank the kindhearted staff at Emerald Ridge, especially Donna and Joe, as well as the Heartland Hospice team for the compassionate care given to our Mother.
