Richard E. Freis

May 18, 1938 ~ September 28, 2021 (age 83)

Richard Edward Freis, 83, of Neenah, WI, went into the Lord’s glory on Tuesday, September 28, 2021 while surrounded by his family.

Richard was born on May 18, 1938 in Humbolt, IA to Ramon Freis and Eloise (Freis nee Miller) Fisher. He graduated from Walker High School in Walker, MN, while living with his brother, mother, and stepfather, Adelbert “Heinie” Fisher and working at the family business, Bayside Resort. Richard attended college at the University of North Dakota at Fargo studying chemistry, during which time he was commissioned into the US Army and served his country overseas in Korea. Upon his return, he completed his bachelor’s degree at the University of Minnesota while serving in the US Army Reserves in the 82nd Airborne division.

Richard married the love of his life, Mary (Lawson) Freis on December 31, 1961. After their marriage, they resided in Bloomington, MN and Pittsburgh, PA, before settling in Neenah, WI. He spent his professional career in the specialty chemicals field while continuing to serve in the US Army Reserves, attaining the final rank of Full Colonel at the time of his military retirement in 1985.

Throughout his life, Richard set an example for his children of loyalty to his family and friends, the value of hard work, and the joy of a good joke, no matter how many times it has already been told. He loved and served his Lord and is rejoicing today with those who have gone before him.

Richard was preceded in death by his father, mother, and his stepfather. He is survived by his beloved wife Mary; his three daughters: Pamela Freis of Eagan, MN; Kimberly Miller of Farmington, MN; and Michelle (Kevin) Balsley of White Bluff, TN; his brother David Freis of Hayward, CA; and his best four-legged friend, Augie.

Private interment will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests contributions to a local animal shelter such as the Neenah Animal Shelter or the Oshkosh Area Humane Society.  Online condolences may be expressed at
