Mary J. Bradley

November 9, 1928 ~ March 14, 2022 (age 93)

Obituary

Mary Jane (Degen) Bradley was born November 9, 1928 in Burlington, WI.  She passed away peacefully on Monday, March 14, 2022 after a beautiful weekend spent surrounded by loved ones.  She maintained her infamous spark and sense of humor until her dying day, teasing and telling stories and joking until her final hours.  Her radiant personality was a true gift to all who knew her.

Mary was an incredibly strong, independent, lively and adventurous person her entire life. From her early years living on a farm during the Great Depression, Mary made the best of every part of her life.  During her single years, she worked as a secretary at various companies in Milwaukee, travelled the country by train with her sister Joan and was a very active member of the Vagabond Ski Club, which is how she met her husband, Red.

Red was a handsome young widower with four children and co-owned the supper club Red ‘n ‘Eds in Marinette, WI.  Mary always said it wasn’t Red, but rather his young son, Tim who truly won her over when he asked her to dance one night at the Club.  Red & Mary soon married, and she gracefully and enthusiastically stepped into the role of mother to his four children, followed soon after by four more.

From that point on, life was defined by family – traveling, camping and skiing together eventually lead to a growing family including many grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Family gatherings (always including “friends who felt like family” – you know who you are!) were commonplace.  The Bradley household was always known for good food, strong drinks and its ever-welcoming aura.

After Red passed in 2001, Mary remained active with her many hobbies – gardening, bird watching, golfing, baking pies, knitting, traveling and spending time with friends and family.  In 2004, she moved to Neenah to be closer to family, and there she made many wonderful friends and became an active volunteer at St. Vincent de Paul in Neenah.  This volunteer work quickly became a passion that lasted 10+ years – she was still working on volunteer projects up until her final weeks.

Mary will forever be remembered as so many wonderful things to so many people – she touched each of our lives in unique, important and incredibly memorable ways.  As one of her nieces said, “Mary was the Betty White of the family”.  She is preceded in death by her husband Red, sons Pat and Tim, son-in-law Bill Maddock and her 4 siblings.  She is survived by her son Michael (Bonnie) of Chamblee, GA, Rory Maddock, Antioch, CA, Bridget (Jesse) Sorenson of Neenah, Kelly Bradley of Neenah, Tom (Stephanie) Bradley of Benecia, CA, and Jedd (Renee) Bradley of Green Bay.  She leaves behind 18 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations can be made to St. Vincent de Paul of Neenah-Menasha, 1425 South Commercial Street, Neenah, WI  54956.
