James C. O’Malley, age 94, passed away peacefully on September 17, 2022, at ThedaCare Regional Medical Center-Appleton. On October 24, 1927, James Coleman was born one of six children to Patrick and Anne (Kerrigan) O’Malley in County Mayo, West Port, Ireland. As young children growing up on a farm, they worked in the potato fields to help their parents make money. Upon finishing his schooling, James left the family farm at age 14 to work on another farm so he could start making his own money. In his early 20s he left Ireland and ventured to Scotland and then to England. At a dance in Nottingham is where he met his bride to be, Enid Best, it was kismet. They married in October of 1957 in Carlton, Nottinghamshire, England and started a family. Shortly after, the decision was made for James to travel to America to the “Land of Opportunity.” He came over on the ship named the Britannica. James made his way to Chicago where he had other family members to greet him and started working at American Can for a short time. It was only a couple of months that went by and he was able to bring Enid and their first-born son, Michael, to America. James was very driven to make a living for his family and started a landscaping company. As his family grew, the sons eventually took over O’Malley’s Landscaping company and James continued working maintenance at the Chicago Transit Authority, eventually retiring from there after 35 years. During his life, he enjoyed taking family trips to northern Wisconsin camping where they loved to fish, swim, and just relax in the outdoors. He also enjoyed being on a bowling league. After his retirement, he was able to work on many more crossword puzzles, play cards, and watch the Wheel of Fortune. He absolutely loved knowing everything he could about his children and grandchildren and they were very captivated by his many stories of growing up in Ireland and the history he lived. James was a very sweet man who loved a good Irish Whiskey and a beer, but also had a stubborn side.
James will be greatly missed by his loving children: Kevin O’Malley, James A. (Deb) O’Malley, John (Kim) O’Malley, Barbara (Fiancé, Christopher Searvogel) O’Malley; his grandchildren: Steven and Amy O’Malley, Sarah O’Malley, Christine (Ben) Justice, Hannah (Mat) Seis, Joseph (Fiancée, Sofia Garcia) Fucarino; a great-granddaughter, Mia Seis; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Michael O’Malley, and 2 brothers and 3 sisters.
A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00pm on Wednesday, September 28, 2022, at Kessler-Fahrenkrug Funeral Home, 304 S. Commercial Street, Neenah, WI 54956. A Memorial Gathering will be held from 1:30pm until the time of the service at the funeral home.
