James “Jim” Firkus, age 75, of Neenah, passed away on Monday, January 27, 2020 after a short illness. Jim was born on January 6, 1945 in Waukesha son of the late Stephen and Mary Firkus. He married Mary Kontney on June 29, 1968 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Polonia and they have been married for 51 years. Jim was a Third Degree member of the Neenah-Menasha Knights of Columbus Nicolet Council 1838 and a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Allouez Assembly #1199 serving as a past Faithful Navigator. He was employed at Gilbert Paper Company for 32 years until his retirement. Jim enjoyed playing cribbage, spending time with family and friends up north at Lake Chippewa and spending warm winters in Panama City, Florida with Mary. He was an avid Wisconsin sports fan, enjoying the Packers, Brewers and Badgers. Jim also enjoyed spending time with his grand dogs and grand cats.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; his children, Michelle (Terry) Barnett, Dr. Jodi (J.D.) Prine, and Alicia (Jeff) Meyer; his grandchildren, Noah and Hailey Meyer and Ayden Barnett; his twin brother, John (Barb) Firkus; a sister, Shirlee (Tony) Peplinski; brothers-in-law, Jerome, Ronald, Bill, and David (Lori) Kontney; a sister-in-law, Margaret (Ray) Bembenek, and numerous nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by an infant brother, a brother Mike, in-law’s, Frank and Laura Kontney, Shirley and Ernestine Kontney, and a great-nephew, Ty Hunter Nordstrom.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 900 Geiger St., Neenah with Fr. Bob Kollath officiating. Visitation will be on Friday, February 7, 2020 at the Kessler Funeral Home, 304 St. Commercial St., Neenah from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m with a prayer service concluding the evening. There will also be visitation at the church on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services. Entombment will be immediately following the service at Lakeview Memorial Park, Oshkosh.
