Fr. Ray G. Dowling entered eternal life on April 20, 2022, at the age 91, in Round Rock, Texas.
Fr. Dowling was born on September 11, 1930 in Neenah, WI to William and Gladys (Moore) Dowling. He attended St. Mary High Menasha, WI and graduated from Neenah High in 1948. He attended college at Southern Methodist, Dallas, TX and the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1952. He then attended St. Francis Seminary where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy. He also attended Marquette University earning a Master’s Degree in Theology. Bishop Stanislaus V. Bona ordained him on May 27, 1961 at St Francis Xavier Cathedral, Green Bay, WI.
Fr. Dowling’s first appointment was as assistant pastor of St. Mary Parish, Leopolis, WI. Next, he served as assistant pastor of Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Green Bay from 1961 to 1962 and Holy Rosary Parish in Kewaunee, WI from 1962 to 1964. He then served 7 years as the Chaplain and an instructor at Silver Lake College in Manitowoc, WI. He was appointed pastor of St. Mary Parish in Brillion, WI from 1971 to 1979. Fr. Dowling then worked in Mexico providing pastoral care to parishes in Los Reyes, La Paz from 1980 to 1986. He then served as Chaplain at the US Penitentiary in Atlanta, GA from 1987 to 1993. From there he served as Chaplain at Federal Correctional Institute, Seagoville, TX from 1993 to 2000. He received senior status in 2000 and continued pastoral work in Diocese of Austin, TX.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Betsy Walker, Rose Spalding, Wm Dowling Jr, Nancy Hoff and John Dowling.
The Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 4, 2022, from 9:30 am to 11:00 am at Holy Family Parish, 1100 W. Ryan Street, Brillion. The Funeral Liturgy will follow at 11:00 am with Most Rev. David Ricken as Celebrant. Burial will follow the Mass at St. Margaret Cemetery within Oak Hill Cemetery in Neenah.
He was truly a remarkable man who saw humor and joy in every aspect of life. He and his stories will be sadly missed.
