Verstegen, Charlotte C.  “Chotty”
Charlotte Verstegen, 79, Little Chute, died with her loving family by her side, Wednesday, August 5, 2009, following a lengthy journey with Alzheimer’s.  She was born November 29, 1929, in Larsen, daughter of Angus and Beatrice (Furman) Clark.  Charlotte married Joseph G. Verstegen August 1, 1951, at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, Little Chute and he preceded her in death December 5, 2005.  She was a graduate of Winneconne High School and Oshkosh Secretarial School.  Mrs. Verstegen was employed with AFLAC for 25 years until her retirement.  She was a member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, Little Chute and volunteered with the American Cancer Society.  Charlotte enjoyed cooking and golfing.  She was a talented baker and excelled in baking, winning numerous baking awards.  Charlotte truly loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them.
Charlotte is survived by her children:  Eileen (Rick) Van Roy, Little Chute; Philip Verstegen and fiance Alice Carlson, Greenville; Greg (Sheryl) Verstegen, Little Chute; Shirley Verstegen (Ken Meurer), Chicago, IL;  Marsha Grebe (Mike Zedler), Menasha; 9 grandchildren:  Brad (Kelly) Van Roy, Dan Van Roy and special friend Andrea Larson, Katie Van Roy, Chad Hanson, Justin (Carly) Verstegen, Shelley (Aaron) Pakala, Caleb Verstegen and special friend Clair Reynebeau, Jason (Lisa) Grebe, Emily (Chad) Mykel; 6 great grandchildren:  Ella, Brenna, Bryson, Aubree, Haley and Madisyn; sister, Gwen (Richard) Elias, St. Paul, MN; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law:  Bernice Vander Velden; Irene (Don) Peeters; Ida (James) Peeters; Joanne Hawley; Marie Verstegen; Loretta Hoelzel; Elton Knutson; nieces, nephews and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Angus and Beatrice Clark; 2 brothers, James and Philip Clark; 3 sisters:  Joan Knutson, Nia Clark, Genevieve (Charles) Worby; brothers-and sisters-in-law:  Aloysius, Lester (Peg), Clarence, Gerald (Margaret), Robert (Lillian), Carl, Ernest (Ann) Verstegen; Regina (Clarence) Bouressa; Joseph Vander Velden; a grandson-in-law, Shane Lorenz-Roche.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. Monday, August 10, 2009, at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, 323 S. Pine St., Little Chute, with Fr. David Funk O.F.M. Cap. officiating.  Interment will be in St. John Cemetery, Little Chute.  Friends may call at the Verkuilen Funeral Home, 101 Canal St., Little Chute from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday and at the church from 11:00 a.m. Monday until the time of the mass. 
A memorial has been established for St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church and the Alzheimer’s Association.

 Vandenberg, Jayne Ann
Jayne Ann Vandenberg, beloved wife of Merle Vandenberg, was born to eternal life on July 19, 2009, at Grand Horizons in Kimberly.  She was born in Little Chute on April 6, 1927, the only daughter of John & Gertrude (Williamsen) VandenHeuvel. 
On May 9, 1953 she married Merle Vandenberg at St. John’s Catholic Church in Little Chute.  Jayne was a devoted mother to Lynne Bishop (Bill Ficken), Spooner; Guy (Deb) Vandenberg, Lino Lakes, MN; and Joy (Steve) Wind, Sleepy Hollow, IL; and she was loved deeply by her grandchildren Aiden & Blake Bishop, Kyle & Gavin Vandenberg, and Kaley & Casey Wind, as well as all her grand-dogs. 
Jayne & Merle have lived in the same house on Jefferson Place in Kimberly for 52 years.   They were members of Holy Name Parish in Kimberly for many years, and more recently re-joined St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church where Jayne participated in the mission club.
In her younger days Jayne enjoyed playing the piano accordion.  For many years she was employed as an executive secretary at Miller Electric in Appleton.  In her spare time she enjoyed several hobbies including ceramics, crocheting, needlepoint and stained glass.  She also brought joy and comfort to many ailing friends by regularly sending them greeting cards.  Her “Club”— a group of lifelong friends who enjoyed each others’ company regularly throughout the years—was an important part of her life.
In their retirement years Jayne and Merle purchased a cabin on Spooner Lake in NW Wisconsin, where they made many fond memories for several summers with their children, grandchildren and new friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three of her brothers: Noel (Ellen Hammen), Little Chute; Gus (Nancy Holmes), Philadelphia; and Roger (Carole), Kaukauna; and by Merle’s eight sisters and seven brothers.  A granddaughter, Sarah Vandenberg, also preceded her in death.
In addition to her family, Jayne is survived by three brothers: Harold (Marian) of Wauwatosa; Roman (special friend Nancy Miller) of Madison, and Ben (Priscilla) of Appleton; many wonderful nieces and nephews, wonderful neighbors of over 50 years, and many, many friends. 
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 23, 2009, at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, 323 S. Pine Street, Little Chute with Fr. Bert Ebben officiating.  Interment will be in St. Nicholas Cemetery, Freedom.  Friends may call at the Verkuilen Funeral Home, 101 Canal Street, Little Chute from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and at the church from 9:30 a.m. Thursday until the time of the mass.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the CNAs and Caregivers—the heroes—at Grand Horizons for their kindness and tender care.  Their dedication, commitment and genuine devotion and compassion have made them close friends of the family.

 

 


 

 Van Den Elsen, Marlene Beverly
Marlene Van Den Elsen, 78, Kaukauna, died unexpectedly Friday, February 27, 2009, in Kannapolis, North Carolina.  She was born February 13, 1932, in Madison, daughter of Albert and Bertha (Purcell) Dyer.  Marlene was once employed as a housekeeper at Appleton Medical Center.  Marlene loved spending time with her family and was an excellent wife, mother and grandmother.  She enjoyed cooking, crocheting, embroidery, doing puzzles and gardening.  She was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Wrightstown.
Marlene is survived by her husband, Ray; her daughters:  Wanda (Gregg) Baeten, Kaukauna and Patti (Richard) Secoolish, North Carolina; her sons: Steven, North Carolina; Joseph (Anita), De Pere; Martin (Jodie), Greenleaf; Phillip, Greenleaf; Dwayne (Sue), Little Chute; Gerald (Brenda) and Curtis (Amy) both of  Greenleaf; a sister,  Mildred Brunson, Madison; grandchildren:  Travis, Amanda, Brad, Kevin, Christa, Tony, Paula, Christopher, Kim, Scott, Nicole, Stephanie, Terry, Sara, Jessica, Tony, Chaka, Jacob and Matthew; great grandchildren:  Tyler, Blake, Carly, Quincy, Isabelle, Andrew, Morgan, Kiera, Sasha, Tony, Crystal and Aiden and a great-great grandson, Matthew; nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Van Den Elsen was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Richard.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 5, 2009, at St. Paul Catholic Church, 437 Main Street, Wrightstown, with Fr. Tom Farrell officiating.  Friends may call at the church from 10 a.m. Thursday until the time of the mass.  A memorial has been established for the American Cancer Society and the Susan B. Kommen fund.
                                     


 

Van Asten, Cecilia M.
Cecilia “Ceil” Van Asten, 91, Kaukauna, formerly of Little Chute, passed away Saturday, February 14, 2009 at St. Paul Home, Kaukauna.  She was born October 12, 1917, in Kimberly, the daughter of the late John and Anna DeWildt.  On September 16, 1939, Ceil married Martin Vanden Hogen and the marriage was blessed with one child, Donald (deceased).  Martin preceded her in death on January 16, 1941.  On February 16, 1943, she was united in marriage a second time to Simon Ebben, and with this union Ceil welcomed five daughters, Elaine (deceased); Eunice (Roger) Verstegen, Oshkosh; Sheila Romenesko, Darboy; Ruth (Thomas) Harp, Appleton; Mary Ann (Jerome) Gehl, Hollandtown; and one son, James (Marilyn) Ebben, Madison.  Ceil and Simon were blessed with two more children:  a son, Allen (Debbie) Ebben, Winneconne; and a daughter, Elaine Rathsack, Delaware, OH.  Simon preceded her in death on June 22, 1963.  On May 23, 1966 Ceil was united in marriage a third time to Arnold Van Asten who had four children:  Gordon (Ramona) Van Asten, Fremont; Donna Van Asten, Kimberly; Jerome (Carol) Van Asten, Darboy; and Yvonne Natrop, Fremont.
In addition to the above-named children, Ceil is survived by 46 grandchildren, 113 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Rita VanderWeyst, Little Chute; brother, Clarence DeWildt, California; sisters-in-law: Inez Ebben, Little Chute; Lucy Vanden Heuvel, Kimberly.  She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. 
Ceil was preceded in death by three loving husbands, Martin, Simon, and Arnold; her son Donald and step-daughter Elaine; great-granddaughter Leah Verstegen; sons-in-law:  Marvin Romenesko and Donald Natrop; sisters:  Marie Van Dinter, Martha Vanden Heuvel, Regina Gmeiner, Harriet Kons, and Agnes Steinhauer; brothers:  Sylvester, Frank, Harry, and Joseph; sisters-in-law:  Gertrude Bloy, Mamie Ebben, Sophia Ebben, Martha Janssen, Katherine Van Zeeland, Justina Bowers, Agnes Ebben, Rose Sanders, Margaret DeWildt, Virginia DeWildt; brothers-in law:  Cooney Van Dinter, Frank Vanden Heuvel, Howie Gmeiner, Ervin Steinhauer, Art Kons, Joe Vander Weyst, Ralph Bloy, Wence Vanden Hogen, Peter Ebben, Chris Ebben, Peter Janssen, Bernard Van Zeeland, Chuck Bowers, Edward Ebben, and Arthur Ebben.
Ceil lived in Little Chute for 45 years and was a lifetime member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, and then joined St. Mary’s Catholic Church after moving to Kaukauna.  She served as a volunteer in many capacities in both parishes as well as at the St. Paul Home.  Ceil lived a life of service to God, family, and friends. 
The funeral mass will be celebrated at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, 323 S. Pine St., Little Chute, Friday, February 20, at 5:00 p.m., with Msgr. James Vanden Hogen and Deacon Vincent DeGroot officiating.  Interment will be in St. John Cemetery.  Friends may call at the church from 1:00 p.m. Friday until the time of the mass. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be sent to:  St. Paul Elder Services, St. Paul Hospice, Fr. Bert Ebben’s Kenyan Mission Project, or the Ebben Family Scholarship Fund at Edgewood College.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to all the staff at St. Paul Home for the kindness, love, and compassion they showed to her during her later years.


 

Van Groll, Roberta R. “Bobbie”
Roberta Van Groll, 57, Town of Vandenbroek, died unexpectedly Tuesday, January 13, 2009, after a short illness with her family by her side.  Bobbie was born April 22, 1951, in Appleton, daughter of Robert and Shirley (Subert) Lettau.  Roberta married the love of her life, Jim Van Groll on August 14, 1980.  Bobbie was a member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, Little Chute.  She was known for her craftiness and loved embroidery, as well as sewing.  Bobbie loved cooking for her family, camping, and decorating within the home.  She had a love for dogs, especially her pet, Cleo.  Bobbie was a family woman who cherished her husband, children, and grandchildren.  She enjoyed spoiling all of her family.
Roberta is survived by her husband, Jim; sons:  Ben (special friend Katie) Van Groll and their children, Kiara and Brady, Rob Van Groll; daughter, Barbara Van Groll; sister, Sandy (Eugene) Verhagen; brothers:  Joe (Connie), Mike, Jerry (Nancy) Lettau; brothers-in-law:  Roger (Beth), Norbert, Dennis (LeaAnn) Van Groll; sisters-in-law:  Laverne (Wallie) Squier, Janice (Allen) Schumacker; further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends.
Bobbie was preceded in death by her parents and father- and-mother-in-law, William (Barbara) Van Groll.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 17, 2009, at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, 323 Pine Street, Little Chute with Fr. David Funk, O.F.M. Cap. officiating.  Interment will be in St. John Cemetery.  Friends may call at the church from 8:30 a.m. Saturday until the time of the mass.  In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
